Ericsson Does Kazakh CDMA

Kazakhstani mobile operator Altel, which as an AMPS operator had been left behind by the emergence of two GSM operators, KCell and KMobile, has announced that it will be migrating to 1x CDMA2000 using Ericsson equipment, starting in the fourth quarter of 2003. The new technology will allow Altel to add SMS and MMS capabilities which the older AMPS technology did not support.

Earlier arguments over whether the equipment vendor for Altel would be Motorola or Samsung seem to have been resolved by choosing a third option: Ericsson.

The Joys Of Wireless Internet

After 8 months of coping with dialup over an old analog line, DUCAT finally arrived today to install something better; a radio system called Airspan, which provides broadband speeds to areas where it is inconvenient to lay cable. I've put up an Airspan Gallery showing a few photos of the device, as well as of the Samal Towers building in the distance where the base station my node connects to is located.

Best Practices

International organizations that talk about their programs in developing countries and regions are always using the term "best practices" when describing the advice they give to governments and companies in the region. Kazakhstan Clamping Down on Critical Websites

April 15, 2003 - Kazakhstan is pulling the plug on Internet websites critical of the country's authoritarian government, the Paris-based media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) warned on Tuesday.

"We ask you to ... end all censorship of news websites, whatever their editorial line," RSF Secretary General Robert Menard said in a letter to culture and information minister Mukhtar Kul-Mukhamed. A campaign against non-state media in this Central Asian ex-Soviet republic has attracted increasing criticism from Western governments and institutions in recent months.
